I was working as Principal Ameer ud Din Medical college, Professor and Head of Neurosurgery at Post Graduate Medical Institute/ Lahore General Hospital, Lahore, Pakistan. This is one of the oldest medical institutions in Pakistan. Lahore general Hospital is 1200 bedded hospital with all medical facilities and surgical specialties. The Neurosurgical department is the oldest in Punjab. There are three Professorial units. My firm comprised of 2 Associate Professors, 2 Assistant Professors and 3 Senior Registrars for clinical work and academic activities. There were 25 post graduates working in different grades for training of fellowship (FCPS) and MS  Neurosurgery under my supervision.

Neurosurgery department is 500 bedded with 20 high dependency beds in each unit. There is separate 15 bedded ICU fully equipped with ventilators and monitoring devices. This department is equipped with 3 CT scanner, biplane digital subtraction angiography (DSA),  myelography machine, colored Doppler and 1.5T and 3T MRI machines. This unit takes all types of emergency and elective patients. The emergency department is fully geared to take head and spine trauma. There are 2 operating theatres dedicated for all the emergency procedures. For elective procedures there are 6 operating theatres equipped with operating microscope, image intensifier, brain lab, ultrasonic aspirator, bipolar diathermy machines and other necessary equipments and instruments. The operative cases are over 400 per month. This includes operations for neurotrauma, brain and spinal tumors, neurovascular procedures (aneurysms, AVM’s, carotid endartrectomies) transnasal pituitary surgery, transoral odontoid surgery, anterior and posterior spinal fixation for trauma, tumors, tuberculosis and degenerative spinal pathologies. LGH  is located on one of the main roads  of Lahore by virtue of which it attracts lot more trauma and elective Neurosurgical patients. This Neurosurgical unit is converted to Punjab Institute of Neurological Surgery . Now this place is a state of the art very busy neurosurgery facility Pakistan.

There are various on going research projects such as Role of endoscopy in Skull Base Tumours, Pediatrics Hydrocephalous, Role of intracranial pressure monitoring in severe head injuries, Anterior vs. Posterior spinal procedures for TB spine, Role of DBS in functional dysorders and so on.

This unit is training Neurosurgeons who are working in our own mother land, Afghanistan , Middle East and many other countries. I am one of the examiners for the Fellowship and MS Examinations. We also get undergraduate students for clinical exposure to this subject. There are regular teaching and journal club sessions, morbidity and mortality meetings.
