Vascular Surgery

The brain vessels have a Circle at the base of the brain called circle of Willis. Some abnormalities called aneurysms occur at the base of the brain at different site of the circle. of Willis As they grow bigger in size they can rupture and present as brain haemorrhage. These patient present with sudden severe headaches, vomiting and maybe associated with one side of the body paralysed. They should be taken as an emergency. Patient should be admitted for observation and angiogram of the brain vessel should be done to localise the defect and then appropriate surgical procedure or endovascular procedure should be done as soon as possible or as soon as the patient condition is good enough to have the procedure. Secondly the patient can have a brain haemorrhage because they have abnormal bunch of vessels called Arterio-Venus malformations. These patients will also need some kind of procedure which depends on the grading of these AVMs. These patients will have either a surgical procedure, Endo vascular procedure or Gammaknief/Cyberknife.

Patients with sudden severe headache with vomiting usually have brain haemorrhage (SAH – Subarachnoid Haemorrhage) due to underlying vascular problems,

These patients require an angiogram (CTA or DSA) to localise aneurysms or other vascular abnormalities.
Both conditions can be managed surgically or endo vasculur procdure depending on appropriate clinical judgement.

“This group of neurosurgeon is highly trained in all kind of vascular surgical procedures, including aneurysms clipping and excision of artrio venous malformations” Dr Anjum Habib Vohra.
